Puppy grooming in Colorado Springs Slow and easy, from day one

How a puppy feels about grooming is decided in the first few visits. Our puppy program takes it one small step at a time.

Puppy program

Three visits, 4 weeks apart

Every puppy starts with three visits, about 4 weeks apart.

112 weeks old

Bath and tidy

Your puppy meets us, the tub, the table and the sound of the dryer.

Bath and tidy

A little more handling of the face, feet and nails.

First haircut

Their first full haircut, if your puppy is ready for it.

We never give a puppy a full haircut on their first visit. It's too much, too soon. A puppy who has a good first visit comes back happy, and that makes every groom after it easier for them and for you.

When to start

Bring your puppy in at about 12 weeks old. That's young enough that the table, the water and the brush become normal before your puppy is old enough to decide to be scared of them. Waiting until the coat is long and tangled usually means a harder first groom. Call us with your puppy's age and breed and we'll plan the first visit.

Shots your puppy needs

Puppies need their distemper and parvo shots from 8 weeks old. Once they're over 16 weeks, they need rabies too. Bring proof to the first visit, like the vet record or a photo of it. The salon sees a lot of dogs every day, and puppies are still building their protection.

What happens at a puppy visit

We take it slowly. Your puppy gets a bath with a gentle shampoo, then a hand dry while we brush, never a cage dryer. Then a light tidy, so they get used to the clippers and scissors near their face and feet. We give breaks, talk to them, and let them get used to being handled. If your puppy gets worried, we slow down. Every visit teaches them a little more than the one before.

What it costs

Each puppy visit is $45 to $65, depending on your puppy's size and breed. A toy Poodle and a Standard Poodle are very different amounts of puppy. After the program, your dog moves to our regular prices, which start at $80 for a full groom on a small dog. We'll give you an estimate on the first visit.

Getting ready at home

A few minutes a day before the first visit helps a lot.

  • Touch your puppy's paws, ears and face every day, with a treat after
  • Brush gently for a few minutes so the brush feels normal
  • Let them hear a hair dryer running across the room
  • Take a short walk before drop-off so they're relaxed

Coats that need an early start

Doodles, Poodles, Yorkies, Shih Tzus and Maltese have coats that never stop growing. Somewhere between about 6 and 12 months, the soft puppy coat changes to the adult coat, and that's when mats show up fast. Puppies who already know the groomer get through that change much more easily.

Questions

Puppy's first groom questions

How young can my puppy start?

About 12 weeks is our usual youngest. Call with your puppy's age and breed and we'll find the right time.

Will my puppy get a haircut on the first visit?

No. Visits 1 and 2 are a bath and a tidy. The first full haircut comes at visit 3, when your puppy is ready for it.

Can I stay with my puppy?

No. Puppies settle much faster without their person in the room. We text you about 15 minutes before they're ready.

Do I have to do all three visits?

We strongly recommend it. The program is how a puppy learns that grooming is safe, and it's the reason our puppies grow into easy adult dogs.

What should I bring?

Proof of your puppy's shots and a leash or carrier. Tell us the breed, the age and anything you've noticed, like a puppy who hates having their feet touched.
